On 25th May 2009, in the Aula Magna of the Università della Svizzera Italiana in Lugano, MaffeisNetwork SA launched the first symposium titled “Blue gold and well-being”. It is the first of a series of events dedicated to the topics of the Universal Expositions, which are related to the well-being of every living creature and our planet itself.
The event was funded mainly by MaffeisNetwork SA with the aim of increasing our awareness of the big topics of our future that we humans and our planet are facing.
The event was also supported and funded by the City of Lugano, AQVA, EcovelClub, Lugano Turismo, Milano Bella da Vivere, Geneva und Neuchâtel universities, Darwin Airlines, Tilo, RailAway, SBB and the nongovernmental organizations FOSIT, Schweizerische Stiftung Madagascar und Helvetas.
“Blue gold and well-being” had great success both with the audience and in the media. The “water” topic was analyzed in all its forms with respect to its utility on a planetary level from different points of view: political, territorial and human.
The meeting began at 4 pm. The numerous participants had the opportunity to embark on a didactic path consisting of several panels created by Ticinese artists in 2003 and provided by ONG Helvetas from Balerna, after which they were given an interesting lecture by Mrs. Anna Lazar, a Helvetas worker, who showed an interactive animation and introduced the concept of „virtual water”, illustrating how much water is consumed in the production of food, consumer goods and commodities.

Her lecture was followed by a video produced by Helvetas, whose title was “Fatima, the mistress of water”. The symposium started at 5:30 pm and was moderated by Roberto Giacobbo, a journalist and RAI host. Among the renowned speakers were Paolo Beltraminelli, member of the municipal council of Lugano, Janusz Dominik, professor at Genf University, Francois Zwahlen, professor at Neuchâtel University, Marco Borradori, head of the Ticinese Department of territory, Alessandro Leto, Senior Adviser G8 (Acqua e sicurezza alimentare in the Italian department of foreign affairs), Graziano Martignoni, professor at SUPSI, Mascia Cantoni, chair of the Schweizerische Stiftung Madagascar, Gian Linard Nicolay of the Technical Commission FOSIT and Marta Ferrari of Playfood Organisation from Milan.
On the occasion of this event there was a photograph competition titled “Water’s multi-ethnic face”, which many people took part in. Under “Portfolio” you can find the 3 pictures that won the competition.
